AI Kill Switch
An AI kill switch is a mechanism that lets an operator immediately halt or disable an AI system when it behaves unsafely, unpredictably, or outside its intended limits. For compliance and risk teams, the question is whether a kill switch exists, who can trigger it, how fast it works, and whether it still functions when the system is under stress or has been partly taken over by its own automated processes. Regulators and standards bodies increasingly expect documented shutdown and human override capabilities for high-risk AI, so the design and testing of these controls is becoming an audit item rather than an engineering afterthought.
