Consent Mechanisms
Consent mechanisms are the ways an organization asks for, records, and honors an individual's permission before collecting or using their personal data, such as cookie banners, opt-in checkboxes, or preference centers. In AI governance they matter because training data and model features often draw on personal information, and regulators such as the EU data protection authorities and the US Federal Trade Commission have repeatedly examined whether consent was genuinely informed and freely given. For compliance teams, the practical question is whether the consent collected at the point of data capture actually covers the AI uses that come later, and whether withdrawal of consent is honored in trained systems.
