Duty Of Care

Duty of care is a legal and ethical obligation to act reasonably so as not to cause foreseeable harm to others, a concept rooted in negligence law that courts and regulators now apply to organizations deploying artificial intelligence (AI) systems. For AI governance, it means a company may be held responsible if it knew or should have known that a system could injure customers, employees, or the public, and failed to test, monitor, or restrict it. Compliance and legal teams use the concept to judge how much diligence is expected before and after an AI tool goes live.
