Emergency Stop

An emergency stop, often called a kill switch, is a mechanism that lets operators immediately halt an AI system's actions, including autonomous agents that are taking steps without human review at each one. For compliance and risk teams, the question is whether a shutdown path exists, who can trigger it, how fast it works, and whether it has been tested under realistic conditions. Regulators and standards bodies increasingly expect documented human override capabilities for high-risk AI, so a stop mechanism that is absent, slow, or untested can become a governance gap.
