Misalignment
Misalignment occurs when an AI system's behavior, goals, or outputs diverge from what the organization intended or what users expect. This creates compliance and operational risks because deployed systems may make decisions that violate regulatory requirements, harm stakeholders, or contradict company policy without anyone explicitly programming that behavior. For governance purposes, misalignment matters because it's often difficult to detect until the system is already in production, making it essential to build testing and monitoring controls that catch these gaps before systems affect customers or expose the company to legal liability.
