Vendor Lock-In

Vendor lock-in describes the situation where an organization becomes so dependent on one AI provider's models, platform, or proprietary tools that switching to another provider becomes costly, slow, or technically impractical. For AI governance teams, it matters because lock-in can limit leverage in contract negotiations, expose the business to sudden price increases or service changes, and make it harder to meet obligations such as data portability, audit access, or exit planning. Compliance and risk leaders typically address it through contract terms, multi-vendor architecture, and documented exit strategies.
