API Key Theft

API key theft refers to attackers stealing the credentials that let software access AI services, such as the secret strings that authorize calls to a model provider's platform. A stolen key can let an outsider run up usage charges, pull data through the service, or act under the company's identity without anyone noticing. For governance teams, this makes key storage, rotation, and monitoring a practical control area, since a single leaked key found in a code repository or shared file can expose an entire AI deployment.
