Commerce Department

The U.S. Department of Commerce is the federal agency that oversees export controls, trade policy, and technical standards, and it has become a central player in AI governance. Its Bureau of Industry and Security restricts exports of advanced AI chips and model technology to certain countries and companies, which affects any enterprise that sells, ships, or sources high-end computing hardware. Its National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) publishes the AI Risk Management Framework and related guidance that many companies use as a baseline for internal AI controls and procurement requirements.
