Information Governance

Information governance is the set of policies, roles, and controls an organization uses to manage its data across its lifecycle, from creation and classification through retention, access, and disposal. For AI governance, it matters because AI systems are only as defensible as the data that trains, feeds, and is generated by them, so questions about where data came from, who may use it, and how long it must be kept all apply directly to AI deployments. Compliance and legal teams rely on it to meet records-retention rules, privacy obligations, and litigation hold requirements that increasingly cover prompts, model outputs, and training datasets.
