In AI governance, it matters because people with access to training data, model weights, or production AI tools can cause serious harm through error, negligence, or deliberate misuse. Compliance and risk teams use vetting policies to show regulators and clients that access to high-risk AI assets is limited to people who have been properly checked.

FBI Details Expose Physical Security Gap in Frontier AI Governance

Former OpenAI engineer Abdulrahman Alfozan was ordered detained pending trial. The FBI alleged he planted covert recording devices in OpenAI conference rooms. One room was used for a meeting with US government officials. FBI evidence includes WhatsApp messages with a Saudi Royal Family member. It also includes a one-way ticket to Riyadh paid for by the Saudi government. An iPhone folder labeled 'Saudi Gov Docs' was cited as well. This case exposes a structural gap in AI governance programs. Physical security and foreign contact disclosure controls have not kept pace with the national security sensitivity of frontier AI research environments.
