Privacy Impact Assessment

A privacy impact assessment (PIA) is a structured review of how a system, product, or project collects, uses, stores, and shares personal data, and what risks that handling creates for the people involved. Under laws such as the EU General Data Protection Regulation, a data protection impact assessment (DPIA) is required before high-risk processing begins, including many AI deployments that profile individuals or make automated decisions about them. For AI governance teams, completing a PIA creates a documented record of risk identification, mitigation choices, and sign-off that regulators and auditors will expect to see.
