Synthetic Media Misuse

Synthetic media misuse refers to the creation and distribution of deepfakes, artificially generated audio or video, and other AI-manipulated content used to deceive people or damage reputations. For governance purposes, this matters because organizations face legal liability when synthetic media impersonates employees or customers, violates privacy, or spreads disinformation that harms markets or public trust. Compliance teams need policies that prevent employees from creating such content, monitor for internal misuse of generative AI tools, and establish incident response procedures if the organization becomes a target of synthetic media attacks.
