Title VII
Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 is the federal US law that prohibits employment discrimination based on race, color, religion, sex, and national origin. It applies to employers with 15 or more employees, and the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) enforces it. For organizations using AI tools in hiring, promotion, or performance evaluation, Title VII matters because a screening algorithm that produces disparate outcomes for protected groups can create liability even when the discrimination was unintended.
