Multi-Agency Regulation
Multi-agency regulation refers to AI oversight that falls under several government bodies at once, each with its own mandate, enforcement powers, and reporting expectations. In the United States, for example, a single AI system used in hiring or lending can draw scrutiny from the Federal Trade Commission, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and sector regulators such as banking supervisors. For compliance and legal teams, the practical challenge is that one product can trigger overlapping or even conflicting obligations, so governance programs need to map which agency has authority over which use case and build controls that satisfy the strictest applicable standard.
