Federal AI Law

Federal AI law refers to statutes, executive orders, and binding regulations enacted at the national level in the United States that govern how artificial intelligence systems are developed, deployed, and used. Because the U.S. has not yet passed a single comprehensive AI statute, this body of law is a patchwork of sector-specific rules, agency guidance, and presidential directives that can shift with each administration. For enterprises, tracking these requirements matters because they can create obligations around transparency, anti-discrimination in automated decisions, data security, and federal contracting, and because the rules may also preempt or conflict with state AI laws.
