UK AI Regulation

The United Kingdom has taken a distinct approach to AI regulation, rejecting a comprehensive AI Act in favor of a principles-based, sector-led model. Rather than creating a new AI regulator, the government has asked existing regulators including the ICO, FCA, CMA, and Ofcom to apply AI governance principles within their existing remits. The AI Safety Institute focuses on frontier model evaluation.

This approach creates a fragmented compliance landscape for organizations operating in the UK. Different rules apply depending on sector and use case, with limited central coordination.

This hub tracks UK AI policy developments, sector regulator guidance, the evolving role of the AI Safety Institute, and how the UK approach is diverging from or converging with the EU AI Act.
